From the downtown, two roads lead towards north, the territorial road 1,
"Vallée du tir " (shooting valley) and the territorial road 13, "Vallée des Colons" (Valley of the Colonists).
They meet by circumventing the Montravel Mount, whose name stems from Tardy de Montravel.

At the Montravel Mount is arranged the botanical garden and zoological of Nouméa: it is accessible by the RT1, or better by taking a road which climbs completely at the bas and on the left hands of the "place des cocotiers" (coconuts squarequare of the centre town (follow the sign "FOL", then Montravel). The small tourist train serves the garden too. |

... and these rows of cooled drink which are a speciality of the country. There are smaller everywhere, road of the Anse Vata for example, or small Chinese groceries. Another characteristic, one sells ice crushed in small pockets in some stores or distributor. |
The North-western part, North-center and to a lesser extent the North-eastern part are reserved for the industrial, commercial parks and modest dwellings. The mountain is the ground of these HLM; the sight and the environment are not so unpleasant, compared to those in metropolis. But misery is felt there in the same way, although the tribes are very often reconstituted there. |
